A sample edit is a mini appraisal, substantive edit and line edit of one chapter of your manuscript. Together, we will decide which chapter. 

This mini edit helps me learn more about you, your manuscript and your writing style. Sampling and editing your work allows me to give you a quote for the appraisal of your whole manuscript.

The sample edit fee is a one-off fee per manuscript.* This fee covers the cost of one sample edit of one chapter. The fee is due before the commencement of the sample edit. The sample edit fee also covers two (2) brief follow-up queries from the author in writing (via email). Should the author need further support, a telephone consult fee applies. 

Please note: All fees are inclusive of GST and are in Australian dollars. Sample edits are $240 AUD.

Appraisals, sometimes called manuscript assessments, are the first step in the editing process. Appraisals provide an overview of a manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses. Appraisals assess the substance and structure of a manuscript and the overall writing quality. The assessment also provides the author with an overview of what kind of editing is recommended. This assessment is provided as a written report

* unless the manuscript is resubmitted for further appraisals.

The price of an appraisal  will be determined after a sample edit is complete.

Substantive editing is concerned with the ‘big picture.’ Substantive editing is essentially structural and developmental editing combined. 

There are 3 main components of substantive editing: structure and content editing, language and style editing, and presentation. 

When undertaking a substantive edit of a non-fiction* manuscript, an editor will consider:

• the manuscript’s purpose,
• the ideal medium for the message (print, digital, etc.),
• the potential readers’ knowledge of the subject,
• the desired outcome or call to action,
• the circumstances that might prompt a reader to read the text, and
• whether the document will be read from beginning to end or by section.

*excluding life writing.

When undertaking a substantive edit of a fiction or life writing manuscript, an editor will consider elements such as:

• medium,
• genre,
• plot structure, 
• central dramatic and thematic questions,
• target audience,
• ‘triggers’ and ‘heaps’ (the story events and how they cause the next event/s),
• dialogue,
• character development, and
• the shape of the action (the exposition, escalation, climax, and resolution).
